SKYWRITING is a stripped-down, hushed collection, produced by Boo Hewerdine and Chris Pepper. Boo joins Phil on acoustic guitar and vocals, adding delicate textures on harmonium, vibes and dulcitone.
The opening track, Bright Autumn Sky sets the tone – wry, wistful, elegiac, but also distinctively dry-humoured. Two songs – Snow Angels and World Enough – are specifically dedicated to collaborators at the Moniack Mhor songwriting sessions in Scotland. Leave to Live (Etchachan), inspired by the writings of Nan Shepherd, was co-written with Ken Cox at Moniack. This, like many of the pieces, shows the depth to which Phil is steeped in the poetic traditions of writers such as Robert Frost, John Clare and Edward Thomas. There are also songs that have proved favourites with audiences at solo performances and with members of The Phil Langran Band over the last couple of decades, notably Injury Time and Snow on the Mountain. Finally, Time’s Dark Wing is a recent song that has become a key feature in Phil’s stage performances.
